To support our efforts to highlight the need for investment in soil monitoring in the 25 Year Environment Plan, we have submitted a freedom of information request to Defra for details of government spending on air, water, biodiversity and soil. We aim to be able to compare how public spending on soil degradation compares with that for the other key environmental indicators.

Our expectation is that the FOI will reveal soil monitoring receives a considerably smaller proportion of spending relative to these other indicators – reinforcing the argument that soil health needs and deserves greater investment if the Environment Plan’s goals for clean air, water, carbon storage and other environmental factors, as well as soil health, are to be met.

We have now received some interesting figures and are currently working to analyse these: when implications for comparative spending are understood fully we will communicate our findings, including any consequential proposals for the direction of public money to support soil conservation at national scale.
