Farm Soil Carbon Code

The SSA is programme manager and host of the UK Farm Soil Carbon Code (UKFSCC) initiative – an Environment Agency funded project that aims to bring clarity, consistency and integrity to the market in farm soil carbon and meet the needs of farmers, investors and other stakeholders.

The project consists of separate elements designed to address different marketplace requirements including ‘Minimum Standards’ that all programmes and projects should look to reach, and a community code that aims to open up the market to new and smaller players.

Our work is based on new and existing research into the technical, legal, practical and behavioural aspects of soil carbon buying and selling, as well as feedback and advice from a variety of stakeholders via our workshops and online consultations.

The SSA is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. We decided not to set up a charity because that would limit some activities such as campaigning on government policies. With a not-for-profit company the directors don’t benefit from profits and money raised is spent on company aims.
